Our Roots

Building Resources for Community

When people hear the name Why We March, they often imagine protest, visibility, and the powerful act of standing together for human rights. Marching has always been an important symbol — a way of showing the world that our communities exist, that we belong, and that equality matters.

But our work has always gone beyond the march itself.

From the very beginning, Why We March has also been about building resources for our community.

Where It Began

Over the years, we noticed a common challenge that many LGBTQ+ people face: finding the right support at the right time.

Information about programs, services, and community spaces often exists, but it can be difficult to locate. Resources are scattered across different organizations, websites, and networks. Sometimes people don’t even know where to start looking.

For someone searching for support, that can feel overwhelming.

So we began doing something simple but important: gathering knowledge and sharing it.

We connected people to programs.
We highlighted organizations doing meaningful work.
We shared tools and guides that could help individuals and communities navigate challenges.

What started as small acts of connection gradually became a larger part of our mission.

Resources Are a Form of Advocacy

Advocacy doesn’t only happen in rallies or policy debates. It also happens in the everyday work of making sure people have access to the information and support they need.

When someone discovers a local support group, that matters.
When a young person finds a guide that helps them understand themselves, that matters.
When organizations are able to learn from each other and strengthen their work, that matters too.

Resources create pathways.

They help people move from uncertainty to understanding, from isolation to connection.

In many ways, resources are the infrastructure of community care.

The Power of Shared Knowledge

Over the past decade, one thing has become very clear: community knowledge is everywhere.

Grassroots organizers, service providers, volunteers, advocates, and everyday community members all hold pieces of wisdom that can help others.

But too often those pieces live in separate places.

One of the roles Why We March has embraced is helping bring those pieces closer together.

By lifting up existing work, sharing tools, and connecting people across communities, we help strengthen the network of support that already exists.

What Comes Next

As our work continues to evolve, we are increasingly focused on something that communities across the country need more than ever:

accessible, shared knowledge that helps people support one another.

This means helping organizations discover tools they can use.
It means helping communities learn from each other’s experiences.
And it means making it easier for people to find support without having to search alone.

Because when knowledge flows freely, communities become stronger.

Why We Build

Why We March will always stand for visibility, dignity, and human rights.

But alongside that work, we remain committed to something equally important:

building the resources that help our communities thrive.

The march may bring people together for a moment.

Resources help sustain that movement for generations.
